The Easter period is normally a very busy one for equipment supply companies in South Africa and 2006 certainly proved no different for Gearhouse SA.

Management and staff were deployed countrywide servicing an impressive array of concerts and shows including tours by Robbie Williams and Snoop Dogg as well as Freedom Day national concerts and smaller events. Included in this massive equipment delivery were the 20-plus Soundcraft consoles owned by Gearhouse SA. Mixing desks ranging from M8, E8, K1 and MH 3 and MH4 series took care of everything from small conferences to massive concerts.

Running concurrently with these shows Gearhouse also kitted out the The Rand Show 2006. The show welcomed over 500,000 visitors this year with the two main entertainment venues playing host to the country's biggest artists, with the Main Arena and the Esplanade Lake Stage being packed with back to back entertainment for all 18 days of the show. Both venues used Soundcraft MH series desks with complete success.

The reliability of the Soundcraft brand means that Gearhouse now have stock of these consoles in all three of their branches and according to Revil Baselga, Audio Operation Manager in Johannesburg, Gearhouse are looking to expand the number of MH series consoles they own.

Peter Day, Operations Manager of Gearhouse Johannesburg commented, "Gearhouse have been very happy with their purchase of MH3 and MH4 consoles. These consoles have proved very versatile in the corporate and local music side of the business."

Renowned bassist Gerald Veasley is now exclusively using bass amps and cabinets from Aguilar Amplification. His rig of choice is the legendary DB 750 Hybrid bass head and GS 410 cabinets. In addition to being a world famous solo artist and the leader of the Heads Up Big Band, Gerald has toured and recorded with many great jazz artists, including Grover Washington Jr. and Joe Zawinul. Gerald is also the bassist featured in the Jaco Pastorius Big Band. He is a well-known jazz educator, who conducts the "Bass Boot Camp" held annually.

The DB 750 bass head is a ground-breaking hybrid amplifier with a discrete mosfet output section and an all-tube preamp. A perfect combination of raw power and enormous headroom, the DB 750 sets the precedent for all hybrid heads. This head develops 750 watts of high fidelity tone in 4 ohms, 975 watts into 2 ohms. The GS 410 was designed to give bass players the full, punchy tone they want at any volume. Its focused sound makes this a great cabinet for all paying techniques - finger style, pick, slapping, or tapping. The efficient design of the GS 410 allows it to sound musical even at the most crushing volumes.

Three Soundcraft mixing desks have been specified and installed in a new, purpose-built concert venue in Eindhoven.

Designed by architects MVRDV and developed by Ove Arup & Partners at a cost of €6.9m, the highly-designed De Effenaar replaces the former single-room venue on the same site that has been demolished to make way.

Trading on two floors, the complex incorporates a café/restaurant, a large concert venue (for 1200 people), a secondary 400-capacity room (with balcony) and a small studio theatre.

De Effenaar, which has quickly become one of the most significant 'circuit' venues in the south of Holland, selected 40- and 32-channel Soundcraft MH3 dual-mode consoles for use in the FOH and foldback positions of the smaller venue, and a 48-channel SM20 for monitor duties in the large concert space.

With theatre specialists Prinssen en Bus providing the overall acoustic consultancy, it fell to by leading sound engineer Jorrit de Kort to recommend the Soundcraft desks, which were installed (along with the rest of the PA infrastructure) by TM Audio.

Originally the Technical Production Manager at de Effenaar, Jorrit was heavily involved in overseeing the new theatre facilities. He realised that Soundcraft would offer visiting sound engineers familiar architecture, but also based his decision firmly on personal experience.

"The MH3 has an impressive number of features - particularly for the price. But aside from all the bells and whistles, what really clinched it for me was the EQ. Soundcraft have produced a console with the familiar Soundcraft sound and a rotary that does exactly what you want it to."

As for the choice for the SM20 this was a no brainer for monitoring duties. The requirement for 18 auxes and top quality audio was non negotiable, said Jorrit. "In that range of consoles competition is thin and the SM20 offered the only obvious choice."

All desks were provided by Audio XL, Soundcraft's Dutch distributors.

With the opening of de Effenaar, the city of Eindhoven's investment in bringing arts and culture back to the city centre looks to have been vindicated, and audience numbers are already way up on that of the venue's predecessor.

May 30, 2006 - Utrecht - the Netherlands - Today Audio Ease released a Windows-RTAS and Windows VST version of Altiverb, the numerous award winning convolution reverb on the Mac. The new version is made available as a free download for all Altiverb 5 owners. Suggested retail price is $595.

August 2001 Altiverb made history when it was released as the first convolution reverb plug-in ever. And for the first three years of its existence it remained the only one, anywhere.
"It's obvious now that convolution reverb is here to stay" says Arjen van der Schoot, co-owner of Audio Ease. "And we've been at it over twice as long as anyone else, so no wonder Altiverb is the most efficient convolution reverb, and comes with the largest and highest quality library of acoustics samples."

"It has been a challenge to port our trick bag of Mac optimizations, especially those specifically tailored for the Mac's Altivec chip, over to Pentium type processors. But we are glad to say that Altiverb sounds identical on the PC and the Mac, and we are delighted with the CPU efficiency we've been able to obtain. For six years now we have been traveling and recording acoustics, building up this vast library, so I'm really happy that we can offer all those great spaces to Windows users. Not bad timing either: Altiverb has just been awarded 'Best Signal Processing Software 2006' by US Electronic Musician Magazine."

The Windows release kicks off a series of Altiverb format additions slated for 2006: a version that runs on the Digidesign TDM chips will see light, Pro Tools 7 optimized RTAS versions will be released, and of course Intel-Mac compatibility is in the making as well.

"In the mean time we'll continue to do what we do best: expand our library of acoustics" says Arjen van der Schoot. "Our recordings already include the major concert halls of cities such as Vienna, Berlin, Sydney and Amsterdam, a wealth of legendary US recording studio's, but also the interiors of over 30 vehicles including a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. And we have great stuff lined up for 2006: Altiverb is being used more and more on Hollywood blockbusters so there'll be more planes and helicopters, a set of train interiors, more outdoor acoustics, but also, for music production, a series of Germany's most prestigious recording studios and a collection of French opera's and theatres."
